Description

Your support has been incredible, truly mind blowing actually. Thank you especially to those that have shared my patches on Facebook groups and forums. You doing that helps a small creator like me tremendously, honestly more than you know. If you like the presets please post your impressions online and if possible tag me (@Tanner Yates on FB) so that I can thank you personally. Any help I can get to spread the word is awesome!

Patch Details:

Who else loves them some blackface Fender tones! This pack seeks to capture those sounds, with some liberties taken to make a more idealized version of their sounds. After trying them all, I opted to use the Twin model in the Helix as my starting point for it’s headroom and the extra depth it seems to have over other similar models. With that as the foundation, built around the amp is the most complete and versatile single patch template out there.

The presets feature the following effects pre-setup for you:
Compressor, 3 overdrives, volume pedal, vibrato, tremolo, 4 delay blocks (2 both before and 2 after the amp), a ‘Dirty Verb’ block before the amp, and what I’m most proud of, my version 2 ‘Modverb’ reverb setup.

There are 4 total presets included in this pack. They are labeled:

  • S = Built for single coil guitars
  • SSC = Built for single coil guitars using stock cabs
  • H = Built for humbucker guitars
  • HSC = Built for humbucker guitars using stock cabs

I recommend trying BOTH S & H versions of the patch with your guitar to see which one gives you a better starting point for your tonal preferences. To learn more about adjusting presets for your specific guitar check out this video: https://youtu.be/aqneGjqtwAk

Stock Cabs:

I tend to prefer IR’s for a few different reasons. In particular they use less DSP so you can fit more in a preset, and they tend to sound and feel more realistic to me. The biggest difference to my ears is the midrange, the upper upper treble frequencies, and the detail in the low end. With that being said, great tone can still be had with stock cabs and this preset pack is no different. I demo’d all of the stock cabs and included two versions using stock cabs so you don’t have to use IR’s if you don’t want to. I was impressed with how close I was able to get them to my favorite IR’s for this preset pack!

IR Cabs:

Despite really enjoying the stock cabs, there are some definite benefits that come from IR’s. It’s hard to describe but each of the below IR’s offered something a little different that I enjoyed versus the stock cab included with the presets. I tested every IR I could find to pick the best ones to recommend and ultimately my favorites are listed below (will update as I try new IR’s and find more I like).

  • OH 412 MRBW GNR M25 OH1/2
    • https://www.ownhammer.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186&products_id=438
    • My favorite IR overall for this preset comes from this pack from Ownhammer. Specifically I really enjoyed the OH2-05 mix
    • These IR’s have a sense of space to them that I enjoy and are just really well rounded. The upgrade between this and the Reqwirez IR’s are the mixes of multiple mic’s to get a little more fine tuned of a cab tone. I prefer the OH 1 or OH 2 mixes overall and I recommend sticking with those two at first and trying out the different options within the OH1/2 mixes to find the sweetspot between brightness and fullness for your particular guitar.
  • OH 412 MRBW M75-GNR
  • Tone Junkies M75-Fathead906
    • My preferred IR for the Yeatzee Guitar AC30 pack, this one also fits nicely with this fender tone. It’s got a bit of a different mid range from the others I recommend and because it’s not a 4×12 the lows are different too. I wouldn’t necessarily say go out and buy this IR for this preset only, but if you’ve already got it because of my AC30 patch give it a try and you might really like it!
  • Redwirez Marshall1960A-G12Ms-R121-CapOffAxis-0.5in
    • A very realistic sounding IR with top end bite / sizzle and a full bottom end with a slight scoop in the mids.
  • Redwirez Marshall1960A-G12Ms-SM7-Cone-1in
    • This IR features that dynamic mic sound with a unique full mid range. Depending on your guitar / low end preferences try out the 0-3in versions.
  • Redwirez Marshall1960A-G12Ms-SM57-Coneedge-0.5in
    • The classic SM57 sound is captured with this IR pretty well. It doesn’t have the rounded edges of the R121 and offers a different flavor mid range to the SM7. It’s a little more aggressive which could work better in a mix. If it’s too thin or has too much low end for your guitar try the 0-3in versions or the “cone-1in” version.
  • OH 112 DLX Alnico SLVR
    • I can’t for the life of me find how I got this IR, or the specific name of the IR I have (the name was changed for some reason). Regardless, if you’ve got the OH 112 Deluxe pack check out the silver speaker mixes, this was my favorite for this amp from the 1×12 speaker IR’s I tried.

*All Redwirez IR’s recommended above came from their FREE pack, which I learned they changed to include different impulse responses than the original. Still worth grabbing their free pack to check out: https://redwirez.com/pages/the-marshall-1960a-ir-pack

It’s important to note that these IR’s are not requirements, and I whole heatedly recommend you try out the stock cabs as well as your existing impulse responses first (but be prepared to make EQ adjustments to match your specific IR’s, they make a massive difference in tone). If it sounds good, it is good, regardless of what type of cab or brand of IR you use.

Thanks so much for the support, I hope you enjoy the patch!

So far I think this one sounds the best of the ones you made, and for what I will be using for church, and blues at home. Sounds really good through my Suhr HSS classic. The only thing I wish this patch had is a looper to lay down some progressions to play over. Since the gain block at the end did not seem to be controlled by anything, I thought the Helix would let me replace with a looper(?) but no luck. 😉

Thanks Mike! The looper takes up a decent amount of DSP, to get it to fit you could replace the compressor without having to do anything else 🙂 – Tanner

Im loving the tone on your videos but was wondering, I have the powercab 212+, will it have the great tone that Im hearing in your videos? Im new to helix and Im always up to learn from people thats been there done that. I play on my worship team at Church and will be having the powercab as a monitor. Thanks, Terry

Hey Terry, thank you I appreciate it! I’ve never played a 212 powercab but I bet it’d sound KILLER with the presets because it can do stereo. I’m jealous!
